Nintendo Wii U Hopes to Avoid 3DS's Fate in April Launch
Nintendo intends to launch its next generation console the Wii U next year on April 2012.
Nintendo is banking on its new console the Wii U to cover the company's losses with its 3DS console. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said in an interview with PC Mag that Nintendo hopes that the Wii U will prove to be a hit among gamers unlike the 3DS which proved that gamers didn't care for the dizzying effects of 3D on their games.
"Based on the bitter experiences we have had with the Nintendo 3DS, we are making every effort to prepare so that the Wii U will not stumble during its launch," said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.
Nintendo's 3DS had acquired negative reviews with its 3D tech that was too tiring for player's eyes and a mediocre game library that didn't have Nintendo's staples like Super Mario 3D Land at launch. Another factor in the poor sales of the 3DS is the rise of alternative devices like the iPhone and computer tablets that opened gaming to platforms other than the traditional console. Suddenly Nintendo and its rivals Sony and Microsoft's Xbox had to deal with gamers who were more interested in buying a game for 99 cents on app stores rather than plunking down $50 dollars for the latest game. With the Wii U, Nintendo is hoping to arrest this slide and regain its lost revenue but can it provide a unique enough gaming experience like the Wii did in its prime?
The Wii U will have a unique controller that is actually a 6.2-inch touchscreen tablet. The tablet will have an accelerometer and gyroscope for motion control, rumble feedback, front-facing camera and triggers and shoulder buttons. The Wii U offers a new way for players to interact. One player can play in the controller while another focuses on the television set. Players can now actually see the same game in two entirely different ways. It's exciting and innovative. Developers can now expand existing games with another different way of playing. Will this be the start of a console revolution against the smartphone and tablet PC? If Nintendo can get great games and keep prices low enough, the new Wii U could be a contender.
