Nokia Lumia 1020 Camera Wins Science Challenge; Smartphone to Capture Microscopic Subjects
Nokia Lumia 1020 is the smartphone featuring a camera with the highest megapixels to date.
Recently, the 41 MP shutter of Nokia's current flagship was challenged to capture a complicated subject. This time, it was a pathologic subject that could only be seen through the microscopic eye.
John Graff and Mark Li-cheng Wu, researchers from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of California Irvine School of Medicine, published a histopathology paper titled, "The Nokia Lumia 1020 Smartphone as a 41-megapixel Photomicroscope."
Based on the title, the publication used the Nokia Lumia 1020 camera to capture photomicrographs using a microscope eyepiece, WinBeta reported.
Both researchers explained how Nokia Lumia 1020's massive camera pixels, along its optical image stabilization and lossless zoom features, alleviate motion blur and other technical difficulties brought by ordinary lenses used in taking photomicrographs.
Photomicrographs are basically photos taken using a microscope. Scientists and researchers use the process of photomicroscopy to record magnified images of a barely visible subject for various scientific purposes. Often photomicrographs are used in pathology, forensic science and biology where cell studies require captured images for future reference.
Producing a high-quality photograph of microscopic subjects has been a long-time challenge for scientists and researchers alike. Graff and Li-cheng Wu's experimentation using Nokia Lumia 1020's camera lens may contribute to the success of the process and also cementing Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone model as one with the most powerful camera of its generation.
Since its release in July 2013, the smartphone has wowed users with its astonishing ability to capture high-quality images. Forty-one megapixel for a camera is no joke and its power has been tested by professional photographers.
For one, National Geographic Photographer Stephen Alvarez captured the Seven Natural Wonders of the World as part of the smartphones promotion.
Nokia Lumia 1020 also did well when used in fashion photography. In March, the powerful shutter was used by UK's Centrefold magazine to shoot its entire issue, including the magazine's cover.
With its success in microscopic photography, Nokia proved the Lumia 1020 is a preferable device for people who loves photography. Also, the phone contains impressive specs that make it worthy to be called a flagship.
