American multinational corporation Microsoft gets more colourful with the set July release of its premium flagship phone Nokia Lumia 930 in Australia. The Windows smart phone will be released to all major carriers - Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. It can also be bought outright from Dick Smith, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and AllPhones. So how does Nokia Lumia 930 fare against Sony Xperia Z2?

Price

In terms of price, Nokia Lumia 930 is several hundred dollars more cost-effective compared with Sony Xperia Z2. According to Gizmodo, Nokia Lumia 930 costs $729 while Whistleout.com mentioned that Sony Xperia Z2 costs at AU$1,320 in the $30 plan at Vodafone. Given this price, smart phone users just need to add a few dollars more and they can already purchase two units of Nokia Lumia 930 for the price of one Sony Xperia Z2.

Physical Appearance

At the first glance Sony Xperia Z2 is slightly bigger but thinner and lighter compared with Nokia Lumia 930. According to Sony Web site, Sony Xperia Z2 measures 146.8 mm in height, 73.3 mm in width, and 8.2 mm in thickness weighing 163 grams only.

Meanwhile, Nokia Web site stated that Nokia Lumia 930 measures 137 mm in height, 71 mm in width, and 9.8 mm in thickness with a weight of 167 g. It sports bright and glossy shells that can be replaced and swapped. Smart phone users just have to pick from the different colours available based on their mood and style.

Display

Sony Xperia Z2 also has a slightly bigger display than Nokia Lumia 930. According to the above-mentioned sources, Sony Xperia Z2 has 5.2-inch Triluminos display with a full high quality screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. On the other hand, Nokia Lumia 930 only has 5-inch ClearBlack, OLED display with the same screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Camera

When talking about camera, Sony Xperia Z2 is just up by a few notches compared with Nokia Lumia 930. Sony Web site also mentioned that Sony Xperia Z2 has 20.7-megapixel rear-facing camera and 2.2-megapixel rear facing camera. It also has a long list of camera features such as Burst mode, Geotagging, Smile Shutter, Touch capture, and many others. While Nokia Web site stated that Nokia Lumia 930 has 20-megapixel PureView camera with dual LED flash plus four directional microphones with Surround-Sound.

Processor and OS

Both smart phones run on Qualcomm Snapdragon but with slightly different specs and totally different operating systems. The same sources cited above mentioned that Sony Xperia Z2 has Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8974AB Quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz running on Android 4.4 Kitkat operating system. On the other hand, Nokia Lumia 930 has Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz running on Windows 8.1 operating system.

Battery

Sony Xperia Z2 also comes with better battery than Nokia Lumia 930. Sony company Web site also cited that Sony Xperia Z2 has 3200 mAh which is capable of up to 120 hours of music playback time and 19 hours of talk time. Meanwhile, Nokia Web site cited that Nokia Lumia 930 has 2420 mAh battery which can last up to 75 hours of music playback time and 21.7 hours talk time. But the good thing about this Windows phone is the integrated wireless charging capability.

Memory

Still Sony Xperia Z2 is up against Nokia Lumia 930 in terms of memory. Based on above-mentioned sources, Sony Xperia has 3 GB of RAM with a flash memory of up to 16 GB. There is also a microSD card slot which will allow the phone's memory to be expanded up to 128 GB. On the other hand, Nokia Lumia 930 only has 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory. The phone'smemory can also be expanded to up to 128 GB via the microSD slot. It also comes with 7 GB of cloud storage from Microsoft OneDrive.

Other Specs

Sony Xperia Z2 has additional entertainment features like 3D and motion gaming, TV launcher, PlayStation Certified, SensMe and SensMe slideshow, "WALKMAN" application, YouTube, Facebook application, Twitter, TrackID music recognition and xLoud Experience - audio filter technology from Sony. There are also pre-loaded applications in the smart phone such as Google Maps, Google Hangouts, Sony Select, Web browser (WebKit), Google Chrome, Google Play, Google Voice Search, and Google Search.

On the other hand, Nokia Lumia 930 has pre-installed Nokia MixRadio. It also comes with plethora of apps such for personal information management like Kid's Corner, OneNote, Family Room, Social networks in Phonebook, and Wallet. There are also business apps included in the Windows phone like Lync (Corporate IM) free download, and Company Hub for enterprise applications. The Windows phone also comes with document format support for PDF, Word, Excel, OneNote, and PowerPoint. There are also sync type apps included such as Exchange ActiveSync and Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac. It even sports a papyrus app which allows users to take down notes in their natural handwriting just like a paper. There are also built-in game apps like Touch UI, XBox-Live Hub, DirectX 11, and Adidas miCoach. Social apps like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, WhatsApp are also available and much more apps that Windows phone users can use and enjoy.
