‘The OA’ co-creator Brit Marling talks Steve Winchell and her motivation for the character

It only takes a matter of time before “The OA” season 2 hits the small screens. While no official release date has been announced for the series yet, several fans are in the lookout for what’s to come in the series. Previously, lead actress and co-creator Brit Marling (Prairie) talked about “The OA” season 1 cast Steve Winchell (Patrick Gibson), in particular, saying he is a young man getting into a more hyper-masculine side.

“Steve as a character, I think, was born out of all of that,” Marling said. She thinks that beneath the sensitive creature lies a deep desire for something bigger than or more meaningful than what he feels he’s being offered, which goes well with Prairie wanting to share something that might fill the gap. In “The OA” season 1, the lead character taught Steve the movements, hoping that he could help her get into the new dimension.

Gibson agreed with Marling’s remarks about his character. In a recent interview with IFTN, the actor has described his character as someone who has a rich and intricate inner life. The “The OA” season 1 character is someone who would rather conceal how he truly feels.

Steve is one of the characters in the show that showcases restlessness among teenage boys. As for this particular theme, Marling said that their motivation includes travelling around the midwest of the country. They had to sit in classrooms and deal with other kids in order to learn what it’s like to be a young person right now.

Furthermore, Marling shared that she and co-creator Zal Batmanglij have talked with the kids’ teachers and parents and even the kids themselves. “We wanted to talk to these kids and sort of figure out where they’re really about,” she said.

Marling went on to share what they have learned, saying they found that there is a sense of dislocation. She said that it feels like in her generation, she grew up with a sense of purpose and was investing in the American dream, but it is a different case for the younger generation.

Steve was one of the main characters in “The OA” season 1. He was a high school student. At a young age, he has become a drug dealer. “I think these kids feel that something has sort of hit the wall or been derailed. It’s hard to answer the great questions of, “How shall I live my life? What is the meaning of life?” Marling told Variety.

The series also starred Emory Cohen (Homer), Brandon Perea (French), Phylis Smith (Elizabeth), Jason Isaacs (Dr Hap) and newcomer Ian Alexander (Buck). “The OA” aired in Australia on Netflix. “The OA” season 2 release date is expected to be announced in the near future.
