‘The OA’ star Patrick Gibson talks about playing Steve

“The OA” has been renewed for season 2, but no official release date has been set for the sophomore run yet. For the meantime, fans will be delighted to know that actor Patrick Gibson (Steve Winchell) has recently talked about how he has heard about his role, playing his character in the series, as well as his experience of working with Brit Marling (Prairie).

The Irish actor has shared how he was able to learn about the series, saying it was something that he learned about in July 2015. As soon as he read the script for the audition, he knew that something is different about the show, as well as his role.

“There was such a subtle life to Steve even from the few pages; it's hard to say why or for me to analyse it but instinctively he felt like a living, breathing person,” he said. Gibson has recorded his audition piece on tape and sent it off immediately.

Gibson has described his character in “The OA” season 1 as someone who has a rich and complicated inner life. He thinks Steve is one who would conceal how he truly feels.

As for working with “The OA” lead star and co-creator Brit Marling, Gibson said he does not look at it as a challenge. He considers Marling as one the most incredible actors he got the chance to work with. He felt that since they started working alongside each other in “The OA” season 1, their relationship developed naturally without having to analyse it too deeply.

The actor has also described how their characters’ relationship is. “I feel like Steve and Prairie are kindred spirits in many ways. They are both outsiders who above all, crave human interaction in a meaningful way,” he told IFTN. Gibson has also starred in “What Richard Did,” “The White Princess” and “The Passing Bells.”

In “The OA” season 1, Gibson has played Steve Winchell, one of the main characters in the series. Winchell is a high school student who also happens to be a drug dealer. Steve and Prairie have developed a friendship as she has tried helping him become a better person.

“The OA” season 1 also starred Emory Cohen (Homer), Brandon Perea (French), Phylis Smith (Elizabeth), Jason Isaacs (Dr Hap) and newcomer Ian Alexander (Buck). “The OA” aired in Australia on Netflix. Air date for its second season is expected to be announced in the near future.
