Oculus Rift VR headset price tag revealed; new Oculus Remote unveiled at CES
The Oculus Rift is perhaps considered as the pioneer of virtual reality gaming and it has impressed fans with its Oculus Rift VR so far. After years of waiting, the virtual reality headset will soon release to the market and pre-orders are now avaible. The price for the virtual reality headset has already been revealed and it is currently receiving mixed reception from fans.
The first consumer-ready version of Oculus Rift VR will launch soon and pre-orders can now be made at its official website. Despite previous reports and rumours that the headset will come at around US$300 (AU$423) - US$400 (AU$571), the price for the actual Oculus Rift VR headset is now pegged at a whopping US$600 (AU$865). Fans were quick to comment on the price saying that it was a pretty hefty sum for the VR. Recently, Oculus CEO Luckey Palmer shared his thoughts with regards to the issue.
In a recent Reddit AMA, Palmer answered some fan questions regarding the VR headset. Fans commented on the huge price difference between the dev kit version of the Oculus Rift VR and the consumer version. The dev kit version dubbed DK2 costs US$350 (AU$500). Palmer explained that the consumer version is more expensive as it has new features including back of head tracking, headphones, mic, removable facial interface and more. Basically, the consumer version of the VR is better than the DK2 and as such, more funds are required to produce it.
Lucky added that despite the price, Oculus won't be making any profit with the VR. He continued by saying that the Oculus Rift VR headset is a cheap but high-quality headset and that the price is lower than what it should be.
In other news, a new device accompanying the Oculus Rift VR has been revealed at CES, NDTV reports. The Oculus Remote is a small device that sports four buttons that would make controlling the Oculus Rift VR easier. The remote will ship with units of the headset when it launches.
