If latest reports are to be believed, the amply-anticipated OnePlus 5 smartphone may be released sooner than later. A May or early-June announcement is very much possible.

The smartphone maker has never followed any particular timeline for releasing its flagship phones. The May or June release date has been pointed out by multiple rumours and leaks. OnePlus 1 was announced in April, OnePlus 2 in July and OnePlus 3 in June. The exact release date hasn’t been mentioned by Carl Pei and Co yet. As regards the price, the company has slowly been drifting away from its once highly-affordable price offerings. While it still offers premium specs at affordable prices, that’s changing slowly.

Rumours have hinted that the price of the smartphone will be below US$500 (AU$670 approx). How much below, it’s not yet known. OnePlus is said to be jumping in the bandwagon of dual-camera set-ups. Experts expect one of the rear cameras will be of 23MP. Just like the OnePlus 3T, the front camera could be of 16MP. It’s not known whether OnePlus is going for a telephoto or wide-angle solution. The smartphone will most-definitely go for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, ones that are powering the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus.

The Oxygen OS onboard is going to make the experience even better. While the RAM capacity of OnePlus 5 is expected to be 6GB, many reports have suggested an 8GB RAM even. Internal storage would be of 64GB and 128GB. microSD card support is not yet confirmed though one of the SIM slots may double as microSD slot. The smartphone could have a 5.5-inch display. The company may also put a 1080p panel on the display. It seems the smartphone-maker is not yet ready to jump into QuadHD displays. The upcoming flagship’s display could be an AMOLED one.

As far as the design of the smartphone is concerned, not even a single leak has seemed assuring. However, a new render is making rounds on the Internet showing the rear side of the device. The render is based on eyewitness reports. Hence, should be taken with a pinch of salt. The leaked rear does not show a fingerprint scanner. This could mean the Home button would double as the scanner. A radical change in design is not expected. Thus, an edge-to-edge bezel-less display is definitely not a possibility, writes PhoneArena.

This may be disappointing for certain fans, as bezel-less displays are becoming the order of the day. However, the OnePlus 5 will surely be a compact handset, capable of super-fast performance.
