Optus signs another deal with Netflix to boost Christmas revenues
With its eyes on boosting broadband sales before Christmas, Optus recently signed a new deal with popular U.S. video streaming giant Netflix. This is a calculated move by the Singtel-owned telecom company to seize a bigger share of Australia’s lucrative broadband internet market.
Optus will provide a six month Netflix subscription to home broadband customers as part of the deal. The subscription, however, will only be available to those who sign-up for unlimited broadband service that costs about $90 per month between Nov. 2 and Jan. 31.
Netflix was introduced to Australian customers in collaboration with Optus last March. Optus helped the video-on-demand service provider penetrate the Aussie market by featuring Netflix in its marketing campaigns, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. This deal ended in July.
Christmas is the lucrative season when users look for new deals and discounts. Other telecom companies like Telstra and Vodafone Hutchison Australia want to strike similar deals with Netflix during Christmas and to piggyback on Netflix’s immense popularity.
“Our previous Netflix offer was hugely popular and a big draw card for consumers looking for a broadband bundle”, said Vicki Brady, managing director of marketing and product at Optus, as reported by Business Insider Australia.
By partnering with Netflix, Optus is leaving no stone unturned in a bid to regain its position as the second’s largest broadband provider in Australia. After taking over iiNet, TPG Telecom with its combined 1.7 million customers moved up to second position after Telstra with 3.1 million customers.
As of this October, Netflix has 69.17 million subscribers across the globe with more than 43 million in the U.S. Since its launch in Australia, Netflix has managed to gain 1.42 million subscribers, according to Business Insider Australia.
