After earning more than $411 million worldwide, Guillermo del Toro is back for the "Pacific Rim" sequel to be released by Universal Pictures on April 7, 2017. The second instalment of the American science fiction monster film will be written by del Torro, Travis Beacham and "The Incredible Hulk" screenplay writer Zak Penn with a new take on the blockbuster hit.

While talking about his new documentary, "Atari: Game Over," Penn revealed the "Crimson Peak" director and writer Travis Beacham wrote a huge mythology for him to create a different angle from the original one. Based on del Toro's interviews last year, "Pacific Rim 2" begins a few years after Pacific Rim where Kaijus are no longer a threat to the survival of the human race.

"He and Travis [Beecham] created this huge mythology and there is a lot of different stuff to mine," Penn told Flickering Myth during his interview. "I mean, it’s like five movies stuffed into one movie so there's a lot of different directions we can go." Penn, who wrote "X-Men: The Last Stand," "The Avengers," "Behind Enemy Lines" and "Inspector Gadget," concluded there will be more Kaijus as the film is set to feature "large robots and large monsters."

Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro announced in November 2014 that Charlie Day and Burn Gorman will be reprising their roles in "Pacific Rim 2" as Dr. Newton Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, respectively. The Mexican director also admitted Day's Geiszler and Gorman's Gottlieb are two of the most fun characters he has written in the movie, along with Ron Perlman's Hannibal Chau.

Set in the Kaiju-free world, the second film picks up a few years after the events of the first film where the Kaijus are very different. Hoping for three movies, del Toro plans to use the other actors at the end of the second and "hoping that it will ramp up on the third one."

Delving deeper in the Kaiju world, the upcoming film is planned to start filming in November or December 2015, according to ScreenRant. Charlie Hunnam of "Sons of Anarchy" and Rinko Kikuchi are reportedly onboard with some supporting players for "Pacific Rim 2." However, these info are yet to be confirmed.
