Phablet Face Off: Nokia Lumia 1520 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs. Huawei Ascend Mate 2
Hybrid devices are fast becoming a trend. Phablets or phone and tablet in one are among those commonly seen in the market. If you plan to buy one, below are the specs of the three current cool phablets.
Aesthetics
Nokia's Lumia 1520 dons a smooth polycarbonate unibody with rough edges that make it easily distinguishable, belonging to the Lumia series that has 162.8 mm x 85.4 mm x 8.7 mm dimension and weighs 209 grams.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has the classic leathery feeling that will remind you of a real notebook. It is considerably smaller than Lumia 1520 at 151.2 mm x 79.2 mm x 8.3 mm and lighter at 168 grams.
Huawei Ascent Mate 2 is almost of the same size as Lumia 1520 with 161 mm x 84.7 mm x 9.5 mm dimension and weighs 202 grams. Unlike Lumia 1520, Ascend Mate 2 is curved around its edges.
Ergonomically, Samsung's phablet is easier to carry than Nokia and Huawei. But it lacks the slick and smooth look of Lumia 1520 and Ascend Mate 2.
Screen And Display
Among the three phablets, Ascend Mate 2 has the widest screen at 6.1 inches. However, it possesses the lowest resolution with only an eHD 1, 280 x 720 pixels (241 ppi).
Lumia 1520 comes next with a 6-inch screen (367 ppi) then Galaxy Note 3 with 5.7-inch screen. Both phones have full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels with Galaxy Note 3 having a slightly greater pixel density of 386 ppi compared to Lumia 1520 with 367 ppi.
Performance
Lumia 1520 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quadcore 2.2 GHz processor with 2 GB RAM, almost the same as Galaxy Note 3's 2.3 GHz quadcore processor. Ascend Mate 2 is running in an inferior Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quadcore 1.6 GHz processor with 2 GB RAM.
Lumia 1520 is run by Microsoft Widows Phone 8 Black while Galaxy Note 3 and Ascend Mate 2 are run by Android v4.3 (Jelly Bean). If you're into apps, Galaxy Note 3 and Ascend Mate 2 are the better choices as Jelly Bean offers about 650,000 apps in contrast to Windows which only offers only approximately 130,000 apps. However, for those who are new to using smartphones, Lumia 1520 is more advisable as it is easier to use with its Windows platform.
Camera
In terms of camera, Lumia 1520 has a whopping 20 MP camera unit. Galaxy Note 3 and Ascend Mate 2 sport a 13 MP camera unit.
Battery Life
Among the three, Ascend Mate 2 packs the most superior battery unit with 4,050 mAh and promises to last as long as 3.5 days with normal usage. An additional feature is that this phablet can charge smaller phones through a USB port.
Lumia 1520 comes next with a 3,400 mAh and has 27.4 hours of talk time. Lumia 1520 can run at par with Ascend Mate as Windows uses less power than Android.
Galaxy Note 3 only has a 3,200 mAh battery with 21 hours of talk time.
Price Range
Ascend Mate 2 was launched in China at $440 and expected to make its way to the U.S. market hopefully at the same price. Lumia 1520 is remarkably more expensive with a price range from $629 to $925 in Australia while Galaxy Note 3's price starts at $614 up to $899.

Ascend Mate 2 is powered by a 4,050 mAh battery unit, which can charge smaller phones and significantly cheaper in price.
