In keeping with Microsoft's plans of improving the Xbox One, Sony is also looking into options for the PS4 and possible performance boost.

There have been earlier reports and rumours of the PS4 getting an "insane" boost via an insider. Now, Red Gaming Tech seems to have stumbled upon the explanation of how it may possibly turn out.

According to the report, the performance boost for the PS4 may involve its SDK and GPGPU rendering. The report quotes a new Twitter post by insider Thuway, which states, "Future SDK improvements on PS4 will focus on GPGPU rendering. This is when delta between PS4 and X1 will magnify."

As a background to what the power of the PS4 is, the basic GPU architecture has a total of 1,152 processors, which can be utilised differently, and is the expansion of the previous generation's two to what is now an eight line-up. Called the Asynchronous Compute Engines, these units are able to control the scheduled tasks to avoid interference or drainage of processing power when it comes to graphics.

The improvement won't just be for the benefit of gamers, as the report also states that the ICE Team's improvement of the SDK will also be beneficial for developers.

The Future of PlayStation Discussed

Sony has quite ig plans for PlayStation far beyond the E3 2014. Some of these have been touched on during the corporate strategy meeting in Tokyo, helmed by company CEO Kaz Hirai.

DualShockers has obtained the transcript of the event, which reveals a number of details for the future plans Sony execs have for the future of its gaming department.

It seems the PS Plus and PS Network have seen a boom in subscribers. Sony has acknowledged that with this comes the need for better infrastructure as an investment for the growing segment. The year 2014 may be the year these investments will be put into action.

At the same time, Sony has also touched on the fact the PS4 is really worth being called the next-gen console, given how it has expanded the gameplay and the type of gaming fans are accustomed to.

"PS4 has dramatically expanded the possibilities of game play. But at the same time, PS4 is also designed to provide the kinds of social experiences via the network that offer users a richer gaming experience than ever before. PS4's remote play function also allows users to easily enjoy the PS4 experience on their PlayStation Vita, expanding the PS4 gaming experience beyond your living room, and making it available anytime, anywhere," said Hirai, as quoted by DualShockers.

While there has been talk about the age-old disc vs. digital, especially with the upcoming PlayStation Now release for the summer, it may be Sony will not do a drastic 180-degree turn to digital, but rather have it as a viable option for those who want it.

This is a good option, and one that has many branches beyond the PS4 and the PS Vita, as there has also been mentioned plans on allowing compatibility for the PlayStation Now with the Bravia LCD TV slated for launch this year.

As parting words, Hirai did state something that can be treated as a challenge to the PS4 as a console: "The PS2 platform was the biggest success until now in terms of profit, but I believe that PS4's hardware, software and services have the potential to combine and develop into a platform capable of generating even greater profit."
