Rafael Nadal Confident He Can Make A Comeback And Play In His Top Form
Dropping three notches down to World No. 1, Rafael Nadal vows to get back on top of the world rankings. According to Nadal, he is certain he will make a comeback and once again rule the men’s tennis.
Nadal, who performs amazingly well on the red dirt, failed to defend his title at Roland Garros. It was only his second loss, his first since 2009, in the said grand slam tournament. Following Nadal’s elimination at Roland Garros in straight sets quarterfinals defeat to Novak Djokovic, the Spanish tennis star has dropped in the latest world rankings to World No. 10.
However, Nadal is undeterred that he can return to the top of his game even though he had fewer titles and sank to the lowest position ranking he had in the last 10 years this season. As he turns his attention to the grasscourt tournaments, Nadal is going work on improving his tennis. He is going to be a force to be reckoned with on tournaments.
“I have to work hard to improve my level of tennis, my level of intensity on court,” Nadal was quoted saying in an article by CNN. “If that happens, I’m confident I can be back and compete at the highest level.”
Nadal will begin his grasscourt season in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) 250 series tennis tournament at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, where he is a two-time champion. Nadal first won the title in 2005 against Gaston Gaudio and in 2007 against Stan Wawrinka.
Nadal’s quarterfinals defeat at Roland Garros has given him an extra week to adapt and accustom himself on the grass of Stuttgart. As seen on his recent post on Facebook, Nadal continues his preparation and training for the tournament, which has officially kicked on June 6.
The 14-time grand slam champion is seeded first at the Mercedes Cup. He is through to the second round after receiving a bye in the first round. Nadal will play Cypriot player Marcos Baghdatis, who defeated Lukas Rosol in the first round. Also playing in the tournament are Australian Bernard Tomic, defending US Open champion Marin Cilic, Gael Monfils, and up-and-coming star Dominic Thiem.
