Reddit, a popular social news Web site, nabbed a spot at the Guinness Book of Record. It announced that its quest, launched in November last year, to be immortalized with a record for "the largest online Secret Santa game" has ended successfully.

The idea to land a record for Reddit and Redditgifts was pitched by a user with a handle of "someguyfromcanada" who committed to make it his personal mission. After several personal messages and e-mails, Reddit's quest began gaining momentum. Guinness decided to create an original category for the social media.

"In March 2011, we started getting PMs and emails from the reddit user someguyfromcanada. He was saying that he wanted to make it his personal mission to get reddit and redditgifts into the record books. He started with tweets and emails directed at Guinness, took the campaign to the reddit community and eventually, months later, Guinness decided that they were going to create a new world's record category for us!," wrote Reddit user kickme444, the creator of Redditgifts.

Reddit expressed its gratitude to the aforesaid user in the announcement:

"So everyone, please, take a moment and thank someguyfromcanada. Without him, this would have never happened."

The online Secret Santa, organized by Reddit, had 30,250 participants in 115 countries. It is now officially the largest online Secret Santa game. Each of the 30, 250 participants will get his own certificate, if they want one, for making the record possible.

The ink on the certificate is not yet dry, but there's no stopping Reddit from drumming up a new quest to break its own record with an even larger online Secret Santa game.

"We think this year secret santa is going to be even bigger and we can set the record even higher, so stay tuned!"

Beside landing a sweet spot on the record books, Reddit users have other reasons to be glad. It turned out that Redditgift is doing its own share of good deeds around the world! It has raised $38,322 for DonorsChoose.org which aims to bring books to children's classroom. According to the announcement, more than 1,500 redditors signed up to send teachers around the world at least $15 in school supplies.
