Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will receive huge salaries on May 2. However, the boxing official, who will officiate the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, will reportedly only get paid $10,000.

ESPN reported that that the referee will earn the said five-figure salary on the night of the fight. Six boxing officials, namely, Kenny Bayless, Tony Weeks, Robert Byrd, Jay Nady, Russel Mora and Vic Drakulich are reportedly being considered to be in charge of the fight.

Many factors determine the salary of a boxing referee such as tenure as well as the overall fight purse. Ideally, the salary of a referee will be increased for a high-profile boxing match. Do you think that the referee’s salary is enough for the bout deemed as the richest fight in recent years?

As the third man on the ring, Bayless, who officiated five of Mayweather’s fights and seven of Pacquiao’s fights in Nevada, is the favourite. Bayless has refereed Mayweather’s fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2013, in which he earned $10,000 by officiating the contest.

Weeks, who is one of the most valued referees in boxing, is also a frontrunner for the position. Weeks has refereed three of Mayweather’s fights and also three of Pacquiao’s fights.

A referee has a vital role in a boxing match. He needs to make sure that the rules are enforced fairly. Recently, Freddie Roach has uttered his concerns about who will be in charge of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. The seven-time Trainer of The Year said that he is only asking that whoever gets assigned to referee the May 2 bout will give them a “fair fight.”

“I think they all respect me and Manny enough to give us a fair fight, that’s all I’m asking for,” Roach said in an article by Boxing Scene. “Whoever refs the fight, all I’m asking is please, give us a fair fight, and let the best man win, and I think they’ll do that.”

With less than a month until fight night, both fighters are stepping up their training sessions and preparations. However, as Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole puts it, Mayweather and Pacquiao take “different approach” for the highly-anticipated fight. Pacquiao has shut down his training camp to the media so he will have time to plan and focus on his strategy to defeat the brash American. Mayweather, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have any issues with the crowd watching him train.

Mayweather and Pacquiao will meet in the blockbuster bout to unify their World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Council welterweight titles. The fight will take place on May 2 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
