Ricky Martin has embraced his sexuality now and his fans aren’t more proud of him, but long before he came out as a gay person, he used to be one of their tormentors. The out and proud Puerto Rican superstar admitted he was in denial of his true sexual identity that he had taken his anger out on others.

Martin, 41, started singing for the internationally renowned boyband Menudo when he was just 13 years old. His fame was rekindled in 1995 when he released his third solo album “A Medio Vivir.” It was in 1999 when he prepared his first English album, and was able to cross over to the U.S. market, furthering his career.

With the release of his chart-topping singles like “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” Martin became a worldwide phenomenon and even acquired a sex symbol status.

He had remained silent on his sexuality, saying he didn’t have to tell anyone if he’s gay or not. However, in 2010, he had publicly acknowledged his homosexuality. He wrote on his official Web site that he was proud to say that he’s a “fortunate homosexual man.”

Since then he has lived out and proud, and has been given recognition for his contribution to the gay society.

But before all of that happened, he admitted that his actions were nothing to be proud of. In an interview with GQ Australia magazine, the crooner opened up about being an angry man in his teen and early 20s because he didn’t want to accept that he was attracted to other men.

“I was very angry, very rebellious. I used to look at gay men and think, ‘I’m not like that, I don’t want to be like that, that’s not me.’ I was ashamed.”

His religious beliefs as a Roman Catholic and his upbringing prevented him from acknowledging his true feelings, so his self-esteem was crushed.

“I took out my anger out on those around me. I look back now and realise I would bully people who I knew were gay.”

Martin is currently in a relationship with economist Carlos Gonzales Abella. He also has twin sons, Matteo and Valentino, who were born from a surrogate mother.

He joins Seal, Joel Madden, and Delta Goodrem as judges for “The Voice Australia.”
