Rio 2016 Olympics: To protest scoring which led to loss of bronze, Mongolian wrestling coaches strip
Mongolian wrestler Mandakhnaran Ganzorig was stripped of his bronze medal for running away from Uzbek wrestler Ikhtiyor Navruzov in the last 18 seconds of their match on Sunday. To protest the penalty given to Ganzorig, two Mongolian coaches stripped.
Ganzorig was one point ahead of Navruzov with the 65-kilogramme match about to end when he taunted the Ukbek by dancing around his opponent in the last 18 seconds. To celebrate his win, one of his coaches carried Ganzorig around the ring, reports Reuters.
The judges added a point to Navruzov which angered the coaches, Byambarenchin Bayaraa and Tserenbaatar Tsogtbayar, who approached the judges, stripped their shoes and shirts and threw it to the floor. The crowd erupted, chanting, “Mongolia! Mongolia!” reports Time.
Bayaraa, one of the coaches, removed his track pants and protested with the judges. The two threw a challenge flag, but the judges said the call could not be challenged and attempted to wave off the coaches, reports USA Today.
“There was a problem with the refereeing … Three million people in Mongolia waited for this bronze model and now we have no medal,” he discloses.
Ganzorig crouched on the mat, disbelieving how he lost the bronze medal, while the Uzbek wrestler celebrated by wrestling his coach to the floor and kneeling on the mat. He says, “He tried to run (away). This cannot happen. I have little respect for him and for his trainer.”
Security escorted the two coaches off the mat, ending the impasse.
