Russian Facebook Site Offers Snowden Programming Job: 'Edward Interested in Security of Personal Data of our Users'
The founder of the V Kontakte network, Pavel Durov, has made a bid for Edward Snowden to work with him since he is free on asylum, according to a statement on the Wikileaks website.
V Kontakte, also known as Russia's Facebook is the most popular social network in the country. "Today Edward Snowden, the man who has exposed the crimes of American security services against the world's citizens, received temporary asylum in Russia," Durov co-founder of the network in 2006, wrote on his wall on VKontakte.
Durov, 28, told Agence France Presse, "We invite Edward to Petersburg and will be happy if he decides to join the dream team of VKontakte programmers,".adding, "No other Internet company in Europe is more popular than VK."
Head quartered in Saint Petersburgh, VK lauds 210 million registered users and Durov has been compared to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberger.
"No other Internet company in Europe is more popular than VK," Durov said, "I think Edward would be interested in working on security of personal data of the millions of our users," Zee News reports.
Snowden is accused of leaking sensitive U.S. intelligence information and the U.S. has made charges against him to be tried in a court of law. He came to a Moscow airport from Hong Kong and he has been holed up in the airport zone from late June. He reportedly asked for asylum to several countries including Venezuela, Ecuador and other Latin American countries.
However, President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of keeping Snowden in Moscow by getting rid of the bidders who wished to grant asylum to Snowden. He told reporters that Snowden was a "Christmas gift" from Washington to Putin. President Putin said earlier that by chasing away potential asylum bidders, the U.S. had given Snowden to Russia as an early Christmas present.
A mis-tweet from a Russian official connected to the story had said that Snowden had been granted asylum in Venezuela. A complication with moving the intelligence leaker to Latin America involved obtaining the appropriate paperwork, since he was an American citizen. Subsequently, the NSA agent was holed at a local Moscow airport.
