“In The Lonely Hour” singer Sam Smith is making waves everywhere he turns and has beaten Madonna to the U.K.’s number one album, preventing her to score her 12th number one album. Smith’s album claimed the top spot for an eight con-consecutive and beat Madonna at the last minute leaving her new album “Rebel Heart” debut to the second spot.

The Queen of Pop’s album is in pole position throughout the week but Smith managed to sneak ahead at the last minute thanks to his performance on Friday night’s Comic Relief show with his new single “Lay Me Down” with John Legend. The Grammy-winner beat Madonna by 12,000 sales, according to the Official Chart Company.

Ed Sheeran’s “x” landed on the number 3 spot and Noel Gallagher’s “High Flying Birds” album takes number four with his song “Chasing Yesterday.” Last week’s number 4, George Ezra’s “Wanted on Voyage” is currently the top 5 album.

“Rebel Heart” is Madonna’s first studio album to fail to hit the top in the UK since 1994’s “Bedtime Stories.” Scoring the number one spot makes Smith the first male solo artist to achieve six different times at number one with their debut album.

“My album focuses on unrequited love quite a lot because I don't think it's spoken about enough in music,” the 22-year-old British told Interview Magazine. “I've been through it myself and I found it hard to find songs that were about that, so I've definitely tried to make that a part of my album.”

The soulful singer will join the ranks of Simon and Garfunkel who managed to topped the charts on eight occasions with their album “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Other artists who followed the veteran singer’s footsteps are Adele’s “21” and Emeli Sande’s “Our Version Of Event,” both albums managed to racked up seven weeks at No. 1.

Sam Smith recently won four Grammy awards in February for Best New Artist, “Stay With Me” for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and “In The Lonely Hour” for Best Pop Vocal Album. He also won the award for British Breakthrough Act at the 2015 Brit Awards.
