Samsung Ad Mocks Apple, iPhone Fans
Samsung's newest commercial takes a jab to its rival company, Apple and the "cult-like" following that the company has when a new Apple product is released.
The commercial depicts the situation wherein a line of "fans" are standing outside Apple stores in New York and San Francisco, 9 hours before the release of the new iPhone. Statements like "I am so amped, I could stand here for three weeks." and "Only seven people stand between us and meaning." were mentioned by these fans as they wait in line. Upon progression of the commercial, one fan mentioned the battery glitch that iOS5 has in one of the blogs that the person is reading while waiting in line. Other subtle jab like the lack of 4G as well as the same design in the new iPhone by stating "If it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?"
Soon after, the "fans" spots random pedestrians carrying the Samsung Galaxy S II and noticed that it has a bigger screen and has 4G capability. These fans also expressed some doubts about their devotion to the new iPhone by saying "Is this what adultery feels like?" and "I could never get a Samsung. I'm creative" with another person in line exclaiming after "Dude, you're a barista." At the end of the commercial, Samsung then mentioned that "the next big thing is already here."
In response to this commercial, Dale Sohn, President for Samsung Mobile remarked that the company is "excited for the opportunity to educate as many consumers as possible about why the Samsung Galaxy S II is the preferred choice for smartphone owners."
This is not the first time that both Samsung and Apple have debated on which phone is the best through ads or marketing strategies. In the U.K, the two companies argued on which phone should use and advertise this catchphrase: "world's thinnest smartphone." It was ruled out by the Advertising Standards Authority that Apple should be the one to use it as Galaxy S II had "prominent bulges" which makes it thicker than Apple's iPhone 4S.
