Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Likely to Retail below $US300 on Release Date as Phablet Rivals like HTC T6, Nexus 5 and iPhone 6 Emerge
Samsung will likely push down the selling price of the Galaxy Note 3 on release date, the move to deflect growing threats as rumours of arriving rival handsets such as HTC T6, iPhone 6 and Nexus 5 persist.
The sweet spot for the retail price of the 5.99-inch Android smartphone is likely at $US299, which was the introductory price of the Galaxy Note 2 when U.S. telcos started offering the hybrid device to American consumers, Gotta Be Mobile said in a report.
But the price point is applicable only for handsets that are heavily subsidised by network providers, which cut down the tag price in exchange for service plans that normally include a two-year contract.
It will be a totally different story for the unlocked Note 3 though and the likelihood is the upcoming release will simply take on the retail model of the Note 2, which remains pricey at the moment.
In most markets around Asia, for instance, the unsubsidised Note 2 sits on store shelves with a starting price of over $US500, leaving the oversized smartphone inaccessible to many prospective buyers.
And with the impending arrival of serious contenders, which reports said would include Apple via the rumoured 4.8-inch iPhone 6, Samsung would be hard-pressed to adjust its price matrix if only to keep the Note 3 attractive and lure more buys.
A sensible price point for the unlocked Note 3 would be between $US350 and $US400 given that the production cost of each unit for Samsung is the same as that of the Galaxy S4. Note that the two flagships share common components, hence the price of building them shouldn't be too far apart, analysts said.
Besides, offering more solid price point is not entirely new to Samsung as it gained traction against Apple by flooding the market with cheaper Android smartphones. In the tablet arena, for instance, the Asian tech giant jumped to a double-digit global market share this year thanks to its affordable Galaxy Tab models, Patently Apple said in a report.
So while remotely possible, it is not entirely impossible that one great feature to come with the third-gen phablet from Samsung is reasonable pricing. And with the spectre of tougher competition ahead, the South Korean company could be prompted to opt for a downward revision of its Note 3 price model.
The rumoured release date of the Galaxy Note 3 is estimated by analysts to happen on September this year, possibly via the 2013 IFA event in Berlin.
Samsung, however, could alter its launch plans and go for an exclusive Note 3 Unpack event that will be dubbed Episode 2. As such, actual touchdown of the phablet could occur between late August and early September.
