Samsung Galaxy S3 users in the United Kingdom and other regions experienced a number of problems with the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update. It should be a relief for users to know they can skip the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update and go straight to Android 4.4 KitKat. There is now a custom ROM that allows the immediate update. For those using Galaxy S3 GT-i9300, the Android 4.4 KitKat update should offer bug fixes and other conveniences compared to Android 4.3.

The team from OmniROM devs provided the ROM. Many sources consider the ROM to be stable although people should be prepared for dodgy video-playback and lagging camera. Aside from this, there should not be any problems.

Disclaimer: As mentioned, the ROM is only for the Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 international model. Trying it on other models can cause problems. Providers of the update cannot be held responsible for what happens to the device. Users can update at their own risk.

Follow these instructions to update the Samsung Galaxy S3 to Android 4.4 KitKat:

1. Root the handset and install ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.32 or later.

2. Create a backup of all important data files, personal information and settings. Do this manually instead of via Samsung KIES PC Suite.

3. Make sure the device is at least 50 per cent charged. Charge it fully to avoid power interruptions and update problems.

4. Enable USB Debugging mode on the Galaxy S3. To do this, go to "Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging" or "Settings > Developer Options > USB debugging."

5. Install all important USB drives on the computer. Make sure they are for the Galaxy S3 GT-I9300.

6. Download OmniROM 4.4 and PA Gapps to the computer.

7. Connect the Samsung Galaxy S3 to the computer via USB cable.

8. Transfer the OmniROM 4.4 and PA Gapps files and then to the SD card of the device. Do not extract them yet.

9. Disconnect the handset and turn it off.

10. Reboot the device to recovery mode. Do this by pressing and holding the power keys, home and volume up buttons. Wait for the Samsung logo.

11. Use the hard keys or touch control to go through the recovery mode.

12. Create an Android backup of current ROM. To do this, go to "backup and restore > backup" to save the ROM. This will allow users to go back to their original ROM if they wish to.

13. Install the update and Google apps. To do this, choose "install zip from SD card > choose zip from SD card > look for the OmniROM 4.4 file." Confirm the installation. Follow the same steps for the PA Gapps.

14. Following installation, do a factory reset. Go to main menu then select "wipe data/factory reset."

15. Select "reboot system now." This will reboot the phone.

This should complete the process.
