The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active counts as the "outdoor" more rugged edition of the Samsung Galaxy S5 flagship series. As the name implies, it features components and capabilities better suited for people who need to be in more extreme outside conditions than usual. For S5 Active users, Samsung and AT&T have started rolling out the Android 4.4.2 update finally. The update came after the Android update for Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

Despite reports about the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update hitting other Samsung devices, Android Geeks reports that the Android 4.4.2 version may be the last of the KitKat builds to be released for the S5 Active variant. The firmware has been released over-the-air or via OTA. The software version is G870AUCU1ANG3. The build date set on the firmware is August 22. This means users should have access to it since August 22 although some users may still have to wait. According to Samsung's support page, people can expect the following changes from the upgrade:

-Visual Voice Mail (VVM) enhancements

-Security updates and patches

-Application installation enhancements

-Accidental emergency dial fixed on the lock screen

-Several lower layer modem crashes and sluggishness improvement enhancements

-E-mail UX enhancements

-Re-activation lock improvements

To get the update, people can download the firmware to their devices. Samsung advises users to charge their handsets fully before they start updating their units. There are two ways to upgrade. Users can wait for the notification and download prompt. They can also go for manual installation. When the download prompt shows up, people can only postpone the update three times and at a 4-hour interval. If the user reaches the maximum allowable postponement, the device will shift to automatic download and installation.

For those who have not received the prompt, manual installation can be done through the following steps:

1. Connect to a WiFi Network.

2. In the Home screen, navigate to Menu > Settings > More > About Device > Software update > Check for updates.

3. Confirm with OK.

4. The device will initiate download. Tap on Continue and wait for the device to restart.

5. Wait for the phone to finish rebooting then choose Done.

Other users under other carriers may have to wait for updates on the Android 4.4.2 release to their devices. Android updates are always carried in stages thus some users get early or delayed access.
