The long-awaited Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has recently been released in July, whereas the predecessor Galaxy S4 Mini was released in July 2013. Both the handsets pack killer features and provide impressive under the hood performances. Display, Exterior and Size

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini features a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display, while the Galaxy S4 Mini comes with a relatively lesser 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display. The screen resolution and the pixel density of S5 Mini and S4 Mini stand at (720 x 1,280 pixels & 326 ppi) and (540 x 960 pixels & 256 ppi) respectively.

When it comes to exterior, both Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy S5 Mini feature the same perforated (dotted) plastic back. In addition the handsets feature a glossy but fake metal band covering the corners of the handsets. In many ways, the phones look similar to the Galaxy S5.

The S4 Mini comes with a thickness of 0.35 inches and it weighs only 107 g, whereas the Galaxy S5 Mini is 0.36-inch thick and weighs 120 g. Therefore the Galaxy S4 Mini is both thinner and lighter than the successor.

The Galaxy S4 Mini is powered by dual-core (Qualcomm Snapdragon 400) Krait processor, clocked at 1.7 GHz and 1.5 GB of RAM. The Galaxy S5 Mini, on the other hand, is powered by a superior quad-core (Exynos 3) Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz. Also, the handset houses the same 1.5 GB of RAM.

The Galaxy S4 Mini runs on Android v4.2.2 Jelly Bean (upgradable to v4.4.2 KitKat), whereas the Galaxy S5 Mini runs on Android v4.4.2 KitKat. In addition, both the phones utilize Samsung's custom UI TouchWiz on top of Android OS.

Moreover, the Galaxy S4 Mini houses 8 GB of internal storage, while the latest S5 Mini comes equipped with 16 GB of internal memory. In addition, both the phones support microSD card for expansion up to 64 GB.

Camera and Battery

Both the devices sport the same 8 MP rear-facing camera unit with LED flash. In addition, the Galaxy S4 Mini and the Galaxy S5 Mini house 1.9 MP and 2.1 MP front-facing shooters respectively. Furthermore, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini houses a good 2100 mAh user-replaceable battery unit, whereas the Galaxy S4 Mini houses a relatively inferior 1900 mAh user-replaceable battery unit.

Connectivity, SIM and Colour

Both the phones support Bluetooth v4.0, Wi-Fi, LTE, microUSB slots and NFC. Interestingly, the Galaxy S4 Mini supports optional dual-sim mode and it employs micro-sim, whereas the latest Galaxy S5 Mini does not support dual-sim mode but it employs micro-sim.

The Galaxy S5 Mini comes in black, white, blue and gold, while the Galaxy S4 Mini comes in black, white, blue, pink, orange and purple shades. However, not all colours are widely available.

Misc

1. The latest Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini features water and dust resistant exterior. Hence the device is IP67 certified. However, the predecessor Galaxy S4 Mini doesn't.

2. In addition, the Galaxy S5 Mini houses a fingerprint scanner and a heart rate sensor, whereas the Galaxy S4 Mini doesn't.

3. The Galaxy S5 Mini also supports Ultra Power Saving Mode similar to the Galaxy S5, while the predecessor doesn't.

Price and Release Date

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini with 4G LTE is priced at AU$379.95, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is priced exorbitantly at £389.95 in the UK. Also, the Galaxy S5 Mini will start shipping starting Aug. 7 in the UK. However, the release date and price details pertaining to Australia is not available at this point.
