Samsung Galaxy S5 may pack a fancy "diamond-like" coating material for its metal casing.

According to ETNews, Samsung's R&D department is working on a new material for the metal body of its upcoming smartphone, which could include the Galaxy S5. Unfortunately, the new "diamond metal surface treatment technology" will not embed diamonds into the device to make the smartphone sparkly, as using real diamonds can be costly. But it seemed the company can make a way around this. ETNews suggested that Samsung could create synthetic diamond material by exposing carbon to high temperatures and pressures.

The report added that the "diamond-like" material infused in the coating will drastically reduce the amount of scratches in any device where it is applied. Samsung is apparently looking for a way to apply the coating to its devices using nanotechnology.

This new technology could be Samsung's response to the rumoured sapphire technology in future iPhone 6. The sapphire glass has been reported to be used in the screen of upcoming iPhones to strengthen the display and to reduce unlikely incidents of scratching or breaking.

In addition to a diamond coating, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is also rumoured to pack a metal casing, ditching the usual plastic covering of previous Galaxy S devices. A metal built is not impossible, since Samsung finally embraced metallic casing when it released the Samsung Galaxy J in Taiwan earlier this month. Moreover, reports claimed that Samsung will receive initial shipment of metal cases from Taiwanese supplier Catcher Technologies. About 10 to 30 million units will arrive later this month. These reports seemed to hint the arrival of a metal-clad device, which most reports believe to be the Samsung Galaxy S5 that will allegedly be arriving early next year.

Other possible new features to the allegedly upcoming Samsung flagship device include better display and iris verification system. Early this week, ZDNet Korea cited an insider in Samsung saying the company is already developing qHD screen displays with 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution as well as an iris scanner for its upcoming devices.

The insider also said that Samsung is toying with Tizen OS. If this is true, Samsung could be releasing its new device minus Kitkat.

Other Samsung Galaxy S5 rumoured features are 14 nm 64-bit Exynos 6 CPU and 16 MP ISOCELL camera as well as 4,000 mAh battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date is speculated to be held early next year either at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January or at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February.
