Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 is now available in some online stores, and will soon be released to Australia. But those shopping for a new 7-inch cheap Android tablet should probably wait for the new Nexus 7 from Google. There are at least 5 reasons why.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 comes in three screen size variants: 7-inch (like the Nexus 7), 8-inch (like the Galaxy Note 8 and iPad mini), and 10-inch (like the full-size Nexus tablet). It also comes in WiFi only, WiFi + 3G, and Wi-Fi + 4G.

In Australia's Mobicity, the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 price tag is marked $309.95 (for 8GB, WiFi only variant). In contrast, the Google Nexus 7 (launched July 2012) costs $239.95 (16GB, WiFi only). But in a couple more months, Google is expected to release a Nexus 7 refresh that could easily kill the 7-inch tab competition. This does not bode well for the rather pricey Tab 3. That's one out of several to wait for the New Nexus 7 instead of grabbing Samsung's newest tablet.

Here are five of the reasons why 7-inch Android tablet shoppers should hold out for the new Nexus 7 instead of grabbing Samsung's latest, the Tab 3.

1. On-board storage. The current Nexus 7 already has a bigger on-board storage than the newest Samsung Tab. The former has ditched its 8GB variant and now starts at 16GB.

2. Screen display. If the Galaxy Tab 3 had been equipped with Samsung's AMOLED display technology, it could have an extra boost against the Nexus tablet. But its screen display is only 1024 x 600 pixels against the current 1280 x 800 pixels of the Nexus 7. The Google tab's refresh is expected to sport an even better screen.

3. The CPU fuelling the tablet is much more robust in the Nexus 7. It's Google tab's quad-core, 1.2Ghz, NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30L against Samsung tab's dual core 1.2GHz.

4. Battery Life. The Google Nexus 7 runs on a 4325 mAh battery. The Tab 3, only on 4000 mAh.

5. Value for Money. This depends on what's truly valuable for the user. The Nexus 7 does not have removable battery and external memory slot. It also lacks a rear camera. However, when its existing features compete with that of Samsung's, the latter loses in quality.

Android tablet shoppers are advised to think carefully of what they hoped to get from their tablet before making a decision. To be sure, hold out for the new Nexus 7 to better compare it against the just-released Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.
