Samsung Launches Mirrorless Smart Camera on June 20
The successor to the Android-based Galaxy Camera is set to be launched during the Samsung Premier press gathering slated on June 20.
This was according to a report by the Korea Times, stating that the Galaxy Camera 2 will be one of the several Galaxy and Ativ devices that will be unveiled during the event. The statement came from Samsung CEO Shin Jong-kyun who said that consumers can expect the introduction of the company's newest mirrorless camera powered by Google's Android software. The invitation to the June 20 press event actually bears a zoom ring that could very well be the teaser for the launching of the new product.
A mirrorless camera is an amalgam of the professional camera (like the DSLR) and the compact digital camera. It executes professional results but comes in a handy, compact size. A notable feature of the smart camera is its lens system as it performs with both interchangeable and fixed lens. The device would be an interesting choice for professional enthusiasts if Samsung can offer the Galaxy Camera 2 with interchangeable lens.
At this point, it does not seem like Samsung is opting for anything less than giving the consumer the power of choice. So most likely, it will not opt for the fixed lens system that does not have the ability to zoom. It can almost be expected that the company will go toe to toe with competitors, including Polaroid. During the CES 2013, Polaroid had gone a step ahead of Samsung by introducing a smart camera with interchangeable lens.
Samsung had earlier announced the newest members to its Galaxy S4 series with the Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Active and the camera-focused smartphone, the Galaxy S4 Zoom. With all these devices being hyped ahead of the June 20 event, the introduction of a new smart camera could be the proverbial icing on the cake.
The Galaxy S4 Zoom is a camera hybrid that comes with a Xenon flash, 16-megapixel shooter and 10X optical zoom. With both the mirrorless smart camera and a smartphone-camera joining the market, there is no doubt that the Korean giant is gearing up to dominate the smart camera segment ahead of competitors.
