Samsung launches SM-G9298 Android flip phone: Specs, features and details announced
Samsung Mobile has launched an Android flip phone in China called the SM-G9298. The smartphone has been the subject of leaks recently but now the company has made it official. Unfortunately, the handset is not expected to ship anywhere else.
The Samsung SM-G9298 flip phone sports two 4.2-inch Super AMOLED displays with Full HD resolutions (1,920 x 1,080) both on the inside and outside. The back-to-back design is held together by aviation-grade aluminium alloy, which allows the phone to be wirelessly charged. The metal and 3D glass fusion also provides the handset’s premium feel, but not at the expense of an uncomfortable grip.
Inside, the clamshell has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core chip (with frequencies of 2.15 GHz and 1.6 GHz) alongside 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of native storage. An external microSD slot that is expandable up to 256 GB is also available. The phone packs a 2,300 mAh battery, which should last up to 68 hours with moderate use. It has a standby time of about 238 hours (or almost ten days).
The SM-G9298 comes with a 12 MP primary camera with f/1.7 lens at the back. With it, users can record 4K Ultra HD (3,840 x 2,160) videos at 30 frames per second. For its selfie shooter, the handset furnishes a 5 MP front camera with an f/1.9 aperture.
The clamshell’s Chinese moniker roughly translates to “Flagship 8” or “Leader 8.” It comes preloaded with apps like Samsung Pay and S Voice in addition to Microsoft utilities like Word, Excel and PowerPoint. A customisable and multi-functional hotkey is also provided by the Galaxy maker for ease of use. Bixby, however, doesn’t come with the handset.
The Android flip phone also comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It carries a load of 235 grams (or just over half a pound) and measures at 130.2 mm x 62.6 mm x 15.9 mm (or 5.1 inches x 2.4 inches x 0.63 inch). The outside panel of the handset, like typical Samsung clamshells, features an Always-On display.
As previously mentioned, the Samsung SM-G9298 flip phone is only launching in China for the time being. The South Korean tech titan has yet to reveal the handset’s price as well as its release date. Here’s hoping that the company will also ship the Android clamshell in other regions. After all, its mix of retro and contemporary features certainly attracts a good portion of the market.
