Samsung Electronics has reportedly teamed up with Microsoft to make a new tablet computer powered by Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 8.

The Korea Economic Daily, citing an unnamed industry source, said the new tab based on the Windows 8 system would be unveiled at Microsoft's Sept. 13-16 BUILD developers' conference in California.

"This new product manufactured by Samsung will be the company's first collaboration with Microsoft in its hardware devices," it quoted the source as saying.

The New Zealand Herald reported a Samsung Electronics spokesman declined to comment on the reported partnership.

Samsung is the world's second biggest mobile phone maker next to Finland's Nokia.

Industry analysts reckon Samsung is trying to diversify the operating systems of its smartphones and tablet PCs, as it currently relies only on Google's Android system.

Samsung is promoting its Galaxy S smartphones and Galaxy Tab computers to compete against Apple's market-leading iPhone and iPad, but its software is generally perceived to be relatively weaker. This reported move with Microsoft could change the industry game.
