Samsung Electronics and Microsoft have teamed up to manufacture a new tablet computer with Microsoft's latest operating system, according to a report from the Korea Economic Daily.

Citing an industry source, the news report said the new tablet will be based on the Windows 8 operating system and is due to be revealed at Microsoft's BUILD developers' conference in California next week on September 13-16.

"This new product manufactured by Samsung will be the company's first collaboration with Microsoft in its hardware devices," the report quoted the source as saying.

Analysts say that this move indicates Samsung's attempts to diversify the operating system of its devices beyond Google's Android OS on which many of the manufacturer's smartphones and tablets run on.

The attempt could also have been prompted by Google buying mobile device maker Motorola Mobility making it a potential competitor to other hardware manufacturers like Samsung.

Samsung is also trying to beef up its weak software business to compete against industry leader Apple.

There has been no official statement from Samsung representatives.
