Samsung unveiled its software update for the 10.1 inch Galaxy Tab, an update that Australians will have to wait awhile to get because of the Apple and Samsung legal wrangling. Other users will be able to update their Galaxy Tab this Friday.

The update will add several new features to the Galaxy's OS. Samsung said on Wednesday that it was aiming at a more unique user experience that is different from other devices that have the Android OS.

"When we first launched the tablet, we promised our customers that we were going to delight them by ensuring the experience we deliver them helps them with work and with play," Gavin Kim, Samsung Telecommunications America vice president of content, data services and enterprise mobility, said during a press event in New York. "Today we're officially unveiling a major software update that takes that promise even further."

The update includes a new "TouchWiz UX" user interface will bring widget-like "Live Panels", a mini-mode tray that will let users customize the system to access commonly used apps with a single touch.

The redesigned Media Hub will give users access to popular movies and new television content with a Media Hub Show capability when users connect the Tab to a flat-screen TV via an HDMI cable.

Other features include some pre-loaded apps like the Amazon Music Cloud Player, Amazon Kindle e-book reader and "Words with Friends" from Zynga. Users will also get full support for Exchange Activesync 14, Cisco VPN support, Sybase mobile device management and Cisco WebEx for mobile conferencing.

Users will also get Samsung's updated Kies 2.0 app that will make sharing files between other platforms easier. The Swype keyboard add-on is also included that lets users trace words over the re-sizeable keyboard instead of tapping the words. Users can now print wirelessly to any compatible printer.

"We've done a lot of research on what consumers are looking to improve," Kim said. "It follows along those three general categories, with ease of use and visual appeal, much more fun and entertaining and enterprise enablement. It's not intended to be intrusive but is intended to be helpful."
