Sarah Blake Shares Why Kanye West Is The Perfect Muse For Her 46 Poems
Poems about Kanye West are rare. This is why, Sarah Blake, who penned a total of 46 poems about the rapper on her book, “Mr. West,” felt the need to explain why West is the perfect muse that fuelled her creative writing juices.
In her collection of poems entitled, “Mr. West,” an unauthorized biography of West through poetry, Sarah Blake wrote about the rapper’s life, which many considers a curious choice. Page Six learns the reasons why she would pick him, of all the subjects. Blake explained that this is because when Kanye’s mother Donda West died, her own grandfather was battling with cancer and died a few months later. When Kanye’s fourth album “80s & Heartbreak” was released, the author herself has a small collection of poems about loss and this made her realise that grieving about losses can take place publicly and privately. This made her want to write about Kanye West through poems. She said whenever she felt the need to write something new and different, she wrote about Kanye.
She told Page Six, “The first poem I wrote, ‘Kanye’s Circulatory System,’ was actually still about my grandfather. The poem ends, ‘You miss her and I miss him but // surely I cannot say if, when you think of death, you, Kanye, think of the heart.’” She said after this first poem, she wrote more about Kanye, reaching 46 poems to date, which have been collated into a book. She said the book tided her over ups and downs of her life as she wrote about Kanye’s relationships, events, albums and music videos.
She said that people have mixed reviews of her book. However, the book has never been authorized. She said she reached out to many, including West’s copyright lawyer but did not get an authorisation from the rapper. Good thing though that what she really wants to do with the collection of poems is to give it to Kim Kardashian’s husband as a gift. She shared at the at the end of her poem entitled, “Jesus Walks,” she wrote her desire to write a book for and not about Kanye.
She even told Philly.com that writing those poems about Kanye made her like him more, despite not meeting him. She also shared that Kanye probably does not know about her, but his lawyers certainly do.
