Philips Hue has completed integrating with HomeKit, Apple's iOS-based smart home platform, to allow users to control the lights in their homes and their home security systems by simply talking to Siri.

The latest version of Philips Hue Bridge 2.0 will work with the entire range of existing Hue bulbs. Hue Bridge 2.0 will allow iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch owners to use voice commands to control their lights. To avail the service, however, users need to purchase a new hub or Hue control box.

“Lighting is the most accessible aspect of the connected home, and as the lighting expert for the Internet of Things we are taking connected lighting to the next phase,” said Eric Rondolat, Chief Executive Officer at Philips Lighting, in a press note.

The slightly redesigned box will be accompanied by Philips Hue app 1.10. Through the new app, Bridge 2.0 can support multiple connected home platforms. Other third-party apps which have HomeKit support are also compatible with Hue Bridge 2.0. This feature will bring together existing and upcoming Philips Hue bulbs and lamps. The original Philips Hue Bridge will receive software updates to continue support.

“By integrating Philips Hue with Apple HomeKit, we are broadening people’s experience of light beyond what has been previously possible, providing seamless interoperability with other connected home devices,” added Rondolat.

Now, Siri can be used to perform various actions and “can interact to deliver dynamic new experiences in an easy and secure way.” Users can ask Siri to switch on Philips Hue lights, control thermostat temperature and even lock front doors.

The starter kit starts at $60 (AU$84) and users have to shell out $40 (AU$56) to upgrade from Bridge 1.0. Starting today, the new Philips Hue starter kits will be available in North America and Europe at any Apple retail outlet, Best Buy and Amazon.

According to CNET, Philips also rebranded Hue Lux bulbs to Hue White and introduced the new LEDs “Philips Hue White and Color.” The entire lighting kit along with new bulbs and Hue Bridge comes at $200 (AU$280).
