The iPad-optimized Skype application made its official debut on the Apple App Stores and iTunes August 1. While the Skype app has been already available for Apple Inc.'s mobile devices iPhone and the iPad, the iPad-optimized app takes advantage of the tablet's larger screen, for crisp and clear video chat both over Wi-Fi and 3G, as well as IM and voice calls.

Early reviews for the new Skype app on the iPad have been positive. Dieter Bohn at This Is My Next says that while video chatting, you can chat in a pop-up window, adjust your status, and visit other apps when a call is in progress. Matthew Miller of ZDNet says that with Skype, you can even make calls from your iPad to landlines and mobile phones, use either the front or back camera on the iPad 2 while Skype, and even use first generation iPad device for the new app.

However, not long after the app appeared for download, Skype removed the new app. "To ensure your best Skype experience, we've temporarily removed Skype for iPad which went live prematurely today," Skype tweeted. "We know you've been eagerly awaiting Skype for iPad and apologize for the inconvenience."

Without Skype for now, iPad users will have to be content with the built-in FaceTime service. However, FaceTime doesn't work in 3G networks. And unlike FaceTime, Skype for the iPad has a window for both the person you're chatting with, and one to view yourself in.

The Skype app is already available for Android smartphones and tablets and other non-Apple devices. The app supports most features that are available for desktops and laptops. Only voicemail and file transfer are not supported.
