Sony's upcoming high-class Xperia smartphones for 2014 runs Android 4.4 KitKat and at least Android 4.3 Jelly Bean for mid-range models. Selected Xperia devices from the previous generation are receiving Android 4.4 update but some of them are tagged "under investigation" by the company.

There are three Xperia smartphones from the previous generation tagged with "under investigation" status by Sony whether to get Android 4.4 KitKat or not this year. Xperia T, TX and V received the status while waiting for Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update release.

Based on technical specifications such as memory and processor, the Xperia T, TX and V can run the Android 4.4 KitKat OS and are eligible to receive improvements from new system optimisations.

If Sony updates them, experience improvements would likely include better memory management, improved multitasking, enhanced battery life, low-powered audio playback needs and smoother UI and touch response.

One possible investigation on the three Xperia phones is the compatibility of the latest Sony Xperia home UI and integrated apps included on the Android 4.4 KitKat firmware planned for Xperia Z series.

As of now, Xperia T, TX and V are set for an official Android 4.3 Jelly Bean which may reveal Android 4.4 confirmation after the update rollout.

No Android 4.4 Plans Yet

Several Xperia smartphones weren't selected yet to receive Android 4.4 KitKat and some of them are considered mid-range devices. The Xperia SP is the only guaranteed to get the latest firmware along with Xperia Z series for 2014.

All of these devices are running Android Jelly Bean version with the exception of Xperia L and C that are now on Android 4.2 OS. Sony's support page hasn't announced any further upgrade plans and decision might have been affected by regional sales.

However, bug fixes and system improvement firmware releases are still possible even if the OS version is the same.

There are several Xperia smartphones somehow excluded from the Android 4.3 and Android 4.4 updates such as Xperia Miro, Tipo, Sola, Ion, Arc, U, P and more which may have been affected by either generation, hardware compatibility or 18-month update window. For owners of these models, custom ROM is the only option to get an update.
