Sony Hits it Big with Apple's iPhone 5, LG's G2 and Samsung's Galaxy S4: Apple, Samsung and LG Happily Sells Sony
Sony Corporation hits the jackpot as it nails down some of the biggest names in tech including Apple, Samsung and LG. The most recent star performer from Sony is not a gadget - not a wonder device like the walkman, the compact disc or the PlayStation, it is the company's new camera chip.
According to the latest research, Sony is the leading manufacturer of chips for high-end cameras which no other tech brand seems to be able to replicate. The company has been recognized for being one of the most pioneering firms. As mentioned, they invented some of the best tech wonders of our time including the compact disc, the Walkman and the PlayStation.
To date, Sony has gained a third of the market amounting to $7.6 billion. Sony continues to dominate the low-power sensors sector. These sensors are responsible for allowing gadgets to document crystal clear snapshots.
Sony's earning on chips started getting an upward momentum since last year when the company's Chief Executive Officer, Kazuo Hirai, began reviving the electronics unit following the consecutive losses for their TV business.
"Sony is making a clean sweep of rising demand," Yasuo Nakane, a Deutsche Bank AG analyst in Tokyo, explained.
"These are distinguished products the company spent three decades developing."
The reliance of competitors on the components produced by Sony is nothing new. The company has also been supplying semiconductor parts for various music players across different manufacturers. Sony is also the major player for imaging sensors accounting to a market share totaling 80 percent.
According to Deutsche Bank, the company earned $111 million or 10.9 billion yen from their chips. Likewise, analysts see Sony earning more and shipping more, reaching up to 3.14 billion for this year. Sony has refused to name companies and what they exactly buy from them but the company has been listed on Apple's website as one of its suppliers. Apple's website did not disclose specifically what they get from the company but it seems the Japanese tech giant is also a supplier to Apple's biggest rival, Samsung, Bloomberg reported.
The image sensor division of the company started thriving starting 2004 when it switched to a technology dubbed as as complementary metal-oxide semiconductors or CMOS. Sony has claimed that process can improve the component and technology. This made the company stand out as they started offering a chip quality different and not found from the rest.
