Spider-Man Under Marvel Universe: Awkward High School Teen, Potentially Non-White
The next instalment of Spider-Man would be full of interesting surprises and twists, now that the sole Sony superhero can now be used by Marvel Studios as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Peter Parker on this next instalment would be a teenager trying to survive high school.
It has been confirmed that Andrew Garfield will not be retuning as Spider-Man, much to the dismay of the fans. However, Feige boosts up the hopes of many that the next instalment would still be worth watching because it would be something no one has seen before: Spider-man as a gangly, awkward teenager.
In an interview with Collider, the Marvel Studios chief said that Peter Parker this time might be 15 to 16 years old, which makes him a high school student, and probably a very awkward and unpopular student at that. Feige said this is something new and totally doable because of the many things from the comics that they could still play with. “We want to play with Spider-Man in the high school years because frankly there’ve been five 'Spider-Man' films, and the amazing thing about it is, even though there’ve been five 'Spider-Man' films, there are so many things from the comics that haven’t been done yet,” he said.
Feige added that changing up this instalment and making it different from the previous Spider-man movies does not mean just changing up who Spider-man would fight this time or who would be part of his support team. Among all the storylines they could pick, showing Peter Parker during the difficult years of being a teenager is reportedly the most interesting. “The most obvious being the ‘young, doesn’t quite fit in’ kid before his powers, and then the fella that puts on a mask and swings around and fights bad guys and doesn’t shut up, which is something we want to play with and we’re excited about,” he explained.
In the same interview, Feige surprised everyone when he said that teen Parker may not even be white. However, the only thing that's confirmed so far is the age range but not the race. While a lot of things regarding the new franchise is still unsure, Feige assured the fans of the superhero during his interview with Crave Online that with this upcoming instalment, they would not be sitting through “another retelling of Spidey’s origins.”
