Filming for the third sequel of the “Star Trek” franchise, “Star Trek Beyond,” is already well underway in Vancouver but production details have remained scarce. However, Idris Elba recently revealed a bit of information about his role in the film which involves a scene with an iconic character.

Elba, who has already started work on "Star Trek Beyond," recently revealed to British newspaper Metro that his character will go head-to-head with Zachary Quinto's Spock.

"Spock was probably my favourite character - and in this one I have some scenes with Zachary Quinto [who plays Spock]," Elba said.

Elba's statement came after a conversation about him being a fan of the classic hit series “Star Trek,” was released, wherein TV3 referred to the actor as a "Trekkie." The 42-year-old said that he wasn't a hardcore fan of the show, but he did watch it numerous times. He also admitted that among all the show’s characters, he has always considered Spock as his favourite.

However, Elba did not reveal any more details about his role in “Star Trek Beyond.” The “Thor” star has been cast as the film’s main villain but as to which character he will portray, it still remains a mystery.

Rumours have it that the Klingons will be the main antagonists in the sequel. An early draft of the film reportedly even included these villains. However, Cinema Blend reports that the scripts people saw were the old versions when Roberto Orci was still spearheading as both writer and director. Simon Pegg has now taken over as scriptwriter and Orci has little creative input as the film’s producer.

Pegg previously confirmed that Elba is not playing a Klingon in “Star Trek Beyond.” Absolute Radio caught up with the writer on the red carpet to ask him about the actor’s rumoured role in the sequel. “That’s not true, not at all. He won’t be a Klingon,” Pegg said to Absolute Radio.

Idris Elba joins the other cast members of “Star Trek Beyond,” which includes Chris Pine (James Kirk), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Zoë Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov). The sequel is slated for release in the U.S. on July 8, 2016.
