In "Supernatural" Season 9, Episode 17 titled "Mother's Little Helper," Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) conducts a solo investigation on the violent murders in Milton, Illinois while Dean (Jensen Ackles) tries to find Abaddon (Alaina Huffman) and deals with the "Mark of Cain." The Misha Collins-directed episode reveals how Sam's current case is connected to Abaddon's plan through the old "Men of Letters" case of Henry Winchester (Gil McKinney) and Josie Sands (also Alaina Huffman).

Spoiler alert: This feature contains major spoilers on "Supernatural" Season 9, Episode 17 titled "Mother's Little Helper." Sam Winchester picked up an interesting case when a kindergarten teacher suddenly beat her husband to death after complaining about what they will have for dinner.

Sam told Dean about the case but the elder Winchester does not look interested. Sam decided to work on the case alone while Dean tries to find Abaddon and come to terms with the mark's burden.

Another violent attack at the diner led Sam to the police station where the other suspects were locked up. During investigation, Sam overheard an elderly woman complaining about demons returning like what happened in 1958 so he decided to gather information from her.

The elderly woman, Julia, confessed to Sam that she was a nun in 1958 when the "Men of Letters" arrived at their convent to learn more on the demonic possession on a nun. Sam learned that it was his grandfather Henry Winchester who investigated the case with his colleague and good friend Josie Sands.

Meanwhile, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) talks to Dean about his recent behaviour after having the "First Blade" and "Mark of Cain" come together for the first time in the previous episode. The demon-turned-therapist pointed out that Dean felt powerful yet scared so he is now stalling the search for Abaddon.

Meanwhile, Julia further shared to Sam the story of what happened at the convent that involves the "Knights of Hell." Henry and Josie discovered Abaddon taking over the convent and the souls of innocent people.

The duo tried to intercept Abaddon's plan but the demon is strong enough to knock out Henry Winchester. Abaddon threatened to possess Henry in order to learn more about the "Men of Letters" but Josie offered herself and that is how she became the treacherous demon.

Sam went to the now shabby convent to discover that Abaddon's right-hand nun, Agnes, still collects souls and turns them to demons that are loyal to Abaddon. Sam and Agnes got in a fight when he tried to exorcise the demon possessing nun and he succeeded by stabbing her with the knife that can kill demons.

Sam returned to the bunker with Dean still looking at papers for his mission to find Abaddon. Sam finally told his brother that he was right about ending Abaddon's evil plan and they must find her to stop the demon from raising an army with innocent souls.

"Supernatural" Season 9 airs Tuesday nights at 9 pm ET/PT on the CW Network. The Winchester brothers will be on another long hiatus but will return with Episode 18 titled "Meta Fiction" on April 15, 2014.
