'Supernatural' Season 9, Episode 21 'King of the Damned' Recap/Spoilers: Dean Accomplishes Mission with the Mark of Cain and the First Blade, Goodbye Abaddon
The Winchester brothers dealt with angels and demons in "Supernatural" Season 9, Episode 21 titled "King of the Damned." However, the main focus of the episode is the issue of control over Hell between demons Crowley (Mark Sheppard) and Abaddon (Alaina Huffman).
Spoiler alert: This feature contains major spoilers on "Supernatural" Season 9, Episode 21 titled "King of the Damned." Abaddon, who really wants to take the throne from Crowley, went back in time with the use of a spell in Scotland to snatch the leverage she can use over Crowley. It is none other than his son Gavin (Theo Devaney).
Castiel's (Misha Collins) loyal angels heard Metatron's (Curtis Armstrong) angel follower bragging about being the chosen one and they managed to capture him. Castiel asked for Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester's (Jensen Ackles) help in interrogating the captured angel because he wants the angel-on-angel violence to stop already.
Dean was about to kill the captive angel but Sam stopped his brother and told him that they cannot get information from a dead angel. The Winchesters used a different method in getting information from the angel by describing him as Metatron's wannabe angel. From there, the hunters were able to find out about Metatron's secret portal to Heaven.
Crowley was in a meeting with his demon advisors but it turns out they betrayed the King of Hell and Abaddon showed up. The red-haired demon wants Crowley to help her in getting rid of the Winchesters and tortured Crowley's son in front of him to make him change his mind.
Sam and Dean left the captive angel alive and fine but he was found dead by another angel who went to check on him. Sam, Dean and Castiel talked about what happened and suggested that it was a traitor angel's work.
Castiel asked Sam a couple of questions about Gadreel (Tahmoh Penikett) when the angel inhabited his body. Sam revealed he never felt threatened when Gadreel possessed him and this made Castiel arrange a meeting with the fallen angel.
The first angel meeting between Castiel and Gadreel did not go well as assassin angels showed up. In their second meeting, Castiel told Gadreel that he has wrongly placed his devotion to Metatron.
Castiel further asked Gadreel to report to him what Metatron is up to since he has a traitor in army. Castiel pointed out to Gadreel that he wants to fight fire with fire.
Crowley and Gavin was having their complicated but fun to watch conversation after years of being apart. Then, Crowley decided to give Dean a call telling him that he is already in touch with Abaddon and where he kept the First Blade.
However, Abaddon was just next to Crowley so it is unclear whether the King of Hell betrayed the Winchesters or he was just acting it out. Crowley told Sam and Dean where to find Abaddon but he dropped the emergency code word which is "Poughkeepsie."
Dean did not tell Sam about Crowley's warning and asked his brother to have a look at the basement to keep him safe from Abaddon's attack. Dean and Abaddon finally have their intense showdown with Dean getting the upper hand since the combination of the Mark of Cain and the First Blade demonstrated that he became more powerful than Abaddon.
Dean killed Abaddon but it was not enough for him so he continued to violently stab her like he just lost his mind. Sam arrived upstairs, saw what Dean was doing and yelled at his brother to make him stop and be in control again.
The Winchesters told Crowley that his son must go back to his time but Crowley did not listen and let his son free to live his new modern life. However, Crowley told his son that he should not tell anyone about being the Prince of Hell.
Sam told Dean that the Mark of Cain and the First Blade are doing something to him so he suggested hiding the weapon somewhere distant is for the best. However, Dean firmly said no.
"Supernatural" Season 9 will continue with Episode 22 titled "Stairway to Heaven" on Tuesday night, May 13, at 9 pm ET on the CW Network.
