Surface Pro 5 vs iPad Pro 2: Apple could consolidate its iPad line; Battle of the hybrids gets tougher
Microsoft Surface Pro 5 and Apple iPad Pro 2 are two highly-anticipated devices of 2017. Apple is reportedly working on a more powerful processor for the iPad pro 2. The chip would be succeeding the A9X processor. Thus, the upcoming iPad models could have the A10X processors, though the company may still use the A9X chip for the cheaper models. Apple is also reportedly working on an Apple Pencil. This could also be launched with the iPad Pro 2. The upgraded stylus, Apple Pencil 2, will attach magnetically to the device.
According to CNET, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has stated that the Cupertino-based tech giant is going to launch a dramatically redesigned iPad in 2018 with flexible AMOLED display. However in 2017, the iPad Pro 2 could have an ultrathin bezel and a larger display. The top bezel will be preserved to accommodate the front-facing FaceTime camera. The bottom bezel could be narrowed or eliminated completely if Apple drops the Homebutton. Meanwhile, the Surface Pro 5 is looking to capture the market will some incredible specs and design.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 5 is rumoured to come with Windows 10 Redstone 3 update, also known as the Creators Update. This could also mean a 4K display with incredible display quality. While it will consume the larger portion of the battery, this is where Kaby Lake chipsets will help in power optimisation. The battery should also be upgraded as Surface Pro 4’s battery was heavily criticised. USB Type-C ports supporting Thunderbolt 3 are also expected. A 16GB RAM could be incorporated in a high-end variant. The Apple iPad Pro 2 has tough competition.
While multiple reports have claimed that Apple will release three new iPads in 2017, there is absolutely no consensus on the sizes. Accessories manufacturer Studio Neat published an analysis of why Apple might introduce a 10.5-inch iPad, combining the resolution of the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the form factor of a 9.7-inch iPad Pro, reported Macotakara. The 10.5-inch iPad Pro 2 could be targeted to education and business markets. The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 was released on Oct. 6, 2015. Hence, Surface Pro 5 is expected anytime now.
Currently, Apple has a wide portfolio of iPad products including the Mini, Air and Pro. The iPad Pro 2 could be Apple’s attempt to converge the lines into one to make marketing attempts easier. Stay tuned on IBT AU for more updates on Microsoft Surface Pro 5 and Apple iPad Pro 2.
