Telstra To Launch Australia's Largest Wi-Fi Network
Telstra Air, Australia's largest Wi-Fi network, will be launched on June 30. This will give customers access to their home broadband allowance both in Australia and abroad. Telstra allied solely with top Wi-Fi provider Fon so Telstra Air members can have access to their broadband allowance in various hotspots around the world.
According to the Australian, in order for Telstra to launch its Air network, old payphones were retrofitted to accommodate Wi-Fi routers and construct a system of wireless Internet hotspots across about 250 towns and cities all over the country. The project started May of last year and utilised Fon’s advanced Wi-Fi sharing technology. When customers access hotspots across the country and the world, they will share a small portion of their home bandwidth in exchange in order to boost the wireless connectivity in the hotspot they will access during remote access.
Telstra is one of Australia’s prominent telecommunications and information services company providing communications services to its clienteles. The company announced that its customers will be able to have Wi-Fi access in over 15 million hotspots out of the country, including UK, Spain, Brazil, Japan, France and Germany. This move aims to make Internet access hassle-free and more affordable during travels for Telstra Air users.
Telstra’s Group Managing Director of Consumers and Products, Karsten Wildberger, said they intended to give Australians the opportunity to be online all through-out the day even when they are outside of the country. Wildberger claimed that in a course of five years, Telstra Air’s growth is expected to reach “thousands of neighbour and millions of people across the country.”
Telstra Air can be used by millions of registered Telstra home broadband users, as well as NBN clients, with no additional charge as long as they have a compatible gateway. Members of the service can find and log into the nearest Telstar Air hotspot using a Telstra Air app.
Wildberger also confirmed deals were made in order to allow Telstra Air civic spaces. This will allow hundreds of public hotspots to be put up later this year. Existing users without compatible gateways can purchase from Telstra to use Telstra Air services.
