Toshiba Encore vs Nexus 7 vs iPad Mini: Toshiba Introduces Detachable 8-Inch Encore Windows 8.1 Tablet
Toshiba added three more computing devices to its product lines, headlined by the detachable 8-inch Encore Windows 8.1 tablet, which is set to challenge Apple's iPad and Google's Nexus 7.
Along with the Encore, Toshiba is also offering the slim and slight Satellite NB15T laptop including the Satellite Click - a hybrid that offers the combined form and functions of a laptop and a tablet.
The Toshiba Encore will hits stores in November with a starting price of $329. The device measures 0.42 inches thick and weighs less than 1 pound. This makes it one of the slimmest and lightest on the market. This Windows 8-powered tablet also offers 1,280 by 800 multitouch display resolution that is optimised for video playback.
The device runs on Intel's Atom processor with 32GB of storage. Toshiba included a MicroSD slot for additional or expandable memory up to 32GB. The Encore also packs on USB and MicroHDMI ports.
Toshiba aims for the Encore to boost the appeal of Microsoft throughout the market especially in the tablet sector.
"Encore is poised to re-energize the opportunity for Windows tablets in the market," said Carl Pinto, marketing VP, Toshiba America Information Systems.
The Satellite Click, on the other hand, offers a detachable tablet/laptop device complete with 13.3-inch display. It packs an AMD A4 APU, Radeon 8000 graphics, 500GB hard drive and 4GB of internal memory. The hard drive is built within the removable tablet section. Each section of the device has batteries ensuring long computing time.
The Satellite Click is the company's first detachable device to ever run on an AMD processor.
Beginning this September, the Click will be exclusively distributed by Toshiba Direct and Best Buy. The device starts selling at $599, a starting price that hopefully will allow Toshiba to capture a huge base market.
Analysts think this move will further boost Toshiba's presence in the detachable device segment though the high sticker price is seen as some form of a hindrance. A better value though should capture more consumers.
The NB15t is a compact laptop targeting price-wary buyers. It is thin, light and offers excellent portability. The laptop features an 11-inch touch screen. It runs an Intel Celeron dual-core processor with USB 3.0 and HDMI ports. Other specs include an HD webcam, Ethernet and 500GB hard drive. The NB15t will hit stores in November starting at $379.
