Manchester United has its eyes set on Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani as a replacement for Robin Van Persie, who has transferred to Fenerbahce. With Red Devils’ recent acquisitions of German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, landing Cavani would certainly improve Louis Van Gaal’s squad.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker has been a long-term target of United’s boss Van Gaal who continues to upgrade his team in the current transfer window. The departure of Van Persie leaves Wayne Rooney as the only recognised scorer in Man United, which makes Cavani the ideal player for the club as per Irish Times.

However, any prospective deal for the 28-year-old footballer may come at Angel Di Maria’s expense with the French club heavily interested in acquiring the Argentine international according to a report from the Guardian. Di Maria struggled in his first season at Old Trafford and Van Gaal is open to letting him go if he can be a makeweight in luring Cavani away from PSG.

United signed Schweinsteiger on Monday for a three-year deal worth £14.4 million followed by the acquisition of Schneiderlin on a four-year contract that fares around £25 million. Van Gaal praised Schweinsteiger as a footballer who has the “ability to control games” adding that the Germany international is "no stranger" to him.

"I worked with him during my time at Bayern and I am truly delighted he is joining Manchester United. His record speaks for itself; he has won every honour at club level and was a major part of the successful Germany World Cup-winning team last summer,” Van Gaal said as per Express.co.uk.

Meanwhile, United may have lost their bid to land Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. Spanish media outlet Marca reported that Real have offered Ramos the captaincy after long-standing skipper Iker Casillas left for Porto as per Mirror.co.uk. The Spain international had asked Los Blancos for a move earlier this summer when reports surfaced that United was interested in signing him.
