Next-generation version of Android is no longer a secret. It is called 4.4 KitKat, pushing away Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Ever since, Android version name is based on desserts in alphabetical order. So, what will be the dessert names of Android 5.0 or Android 6.0?

Key Lime Pie Changed to KitKat

Google will not release Android 5.0 anytime soon and decided to go Android 4.4 which was publicly named 4.4 KitKat. By tradition, Google always names an Android version based on yummy desserts - Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Éclair (2.0), Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3), Honeycomb (3.0), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0), Jelly Bean (4.1-4.3) and KitKat (4.4).

The main reason why Google named Android 4.4 as KitKat is due to the fact that "very few people actually know the taste of a key lime pie," according to the statement from director of Android partnerships, John Lagerling, as noted by TheVerge. Since Android coders are in love with the KitKat chocolate bar, the company made up its mind to name the next-generation Android version "KitKat."

Google reached out to Nestle and, within a day, both came upon an agreement. Up to this date, Key Lime Pie is still being used by Google as an internal reference release code of Android 4.4 KitKat.

Android 5.0 and Android 6.0 Name Game

Android 5.0 may arrive in 2014 instead due to Android 4.4 launching in the fall of 2013. But rumours are already spreading regarding which name should better fall for the 2014 version. Since "K" is out, Key Lime Pie may not be used again, as it is also the internal name for KitKat - what does "L" represents?

For Android 5.0 version, Lollipop, Liquorice or Lemon Drop are some possible good options to avoid repetition of letter or names. In case of Key Lime Pie name evolution, it is obvious the name will turn out to be Lemon Meringue Pie - do most people know it?

Another name is also rumoured to be used by Google for Android 6.0 and it is called Milkshake - sounds so yummy and creamy. Android 6.0 is expected to bring out Nexus 6, which may have an "X Envelope" design, according to a concept strategy with spatial gestures recognition.

It is not how yummy or tasty the Android name is, but how efficient, fun, free and flexible the entire ecosystem would be - which is what Google has been doing for several years.
