Twitter Plans Major Revamp on Design, Separate Tweet Feed Streams Possible
Now that Twitter has publicly announced its IPO process, some things are bound to in the social networking site, including its interface.
Nothing is wrong with the existing interface of Twitter, it's just it is not appealing to the masses just yet. The company is seeking to improve its Web site to gather more users so that it can keep up with the social networking battle. Twitter also seeks to improve member retention since only a quarter of its registered users are active.
Twitter COO Ali Rowghani was quoted from her Fast Company interview that the company is "not delivering the product as we should." Perhaps this is why they are planning a different way to reach the bigger share of the market.
One of the major problems that new users face is the difficulty of understanding the Twitter lingo, hence, making it more technical than what it may seem. The company also would want to make the interface more intuitive for users of all ages since Twitter's user base today is mainly young adolescents.
The rumours have it that the Twitter redesign will have a split streaming of tweets depending on the feeds, like one feed is for photos, one for TV related tweets. Twitter has been reportedly studying a "Trending TV show" box since the social network realized that most people subscribe to Twitter for real-time TV tweets like for knowing the winners of a show, some TV series spoilers and some show gossip.
Also rumoured are the integration of media into the stream without having to expand the tweet view, so users can view the video or the picture while scrolling down the feed. Twitter will then not be only featuring 140-character content but also immerse in the visual media. Visual content is important nowadays since it gathers high engagement among users.
The Twitter redesign will be launched after Apple's iOS 7 release. The new Twitter app for iOS will be updated shortly after the iOS release.
But these changes might not be welcomed warmly by all of their users. Minor upgrades like having replies option to the tweets and blue lines, are ranted upon by some of the Twitter users who prefer something that they are used to. However, the company must understandably go beyond what they currently offer specially with their pending IPO application.
Here's a creative Twitter concept by the artist Fred Nerby which we hope something that future Twitter will look like.
