The actor appears to be having serious thoughts in the shared image with a text on the right side that reads: "For my 35th birthday I have a simple goal... Imagine if 1 million of the 7 billion people on earth shared just $35 with the Ian Somerhalder Foundation we could stop wishing and create change."

For me it's my crucial time in my life and the lives of us all for the type of change on our planet as well as in us that will move us compassionately and sustainably into our future. For Ian's 2013 Birthday project, the main focus of the donations given to the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF) is to provide animal shelter, sustainable farm and a youth education camp. The shelter will become a safe place for neglected or mistreated animals.
