Vin Diesel and Universal Studios reveal possibility of ‘Fast & Furious’ spinoffs [Watch Videos]
Universal Studios and actor Vin Diesel recently divulged that “Fast & Furious” prequels and spinoffs are in the cards. If plans are successful, then fans of the film franchise are in for a huge treat because the stories of their beloved characters including Dominic "Dom" Toretto (Diesel), Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster), Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Tej Parker (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges), could be explored further.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, insiders at Universal Studios said that Diesel and the film studio are in talks over the idea of further developing the "Fast & Furious" plots from the previous movies.
In an exclusive report from Variety, Diesel revealed that they have already written some possible story lines about some of characters in the franchise.
“We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class,” he told Variety.
However, it's still too early for die-hard fans of "Fast & Furious" to celebrate because the planned spinoffs and prequels are still in the initial stages of development. But if it shapes up, a “Fast & Furious” cinematic universe, similar to that of Marvel's, maybe underway.
Universal Studios managed to earn $1.5 billion (AU$2.1 billion) worldwide for "Furious 7," according to Box Office Mojo. After the release of “Furious 7” in April, three more movies are reportedly being planned, including “Fast 8.”
Vin Diesel also revealed the possibility of “Fast 8” a few months back during an appearance at the Teen Choice Awards (TCAs) on Aug. 16. Cinema Blend reports that Diesel paid tribute again to his late friend and co-star Paul Walker. He thanked Paul's daughter Meadow for serving as their inspiration during the "Furious 7" production.
"I love all of you. I love all of you! And… until Fast 8," Diesel said at the TCAs.
Diesel also talked about "Fast 8" at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards on April 12.
"Well, I was trying to keep it close to the vest throughout the release. Paul Walker used to say that eight was guaranteed. And in some ways, when your brother guarantees something, you sometimes feel like you have to make sure it comes to pass. So if fate has it, F8...if fate has it, then you'll get this when you hear about it. Seven was for Paul, eight is from Paul," Vin said.
