'The Voice' Recap: Country-Turned-Soul Singer Meghan Linsey Sings One Republic's 'Love Runs Out'
“The Voice” hopeful Meghan Linsey aimed for a spot in the show’s Top 12 during the Live Playoffs Monday night. The country-turned-soul singer gave a stellar rendition of One Republic’s “Love Runs Out,” which was highly praised by the judges.
Monday night’s episode of the NBC singing competition showcased 10 acts from Team Blake and Team Pharell, including Meghan Linsey. The one-time country chanteuse stepped on stage wearing a black sequined skirt and belted out her “rocks and blues” rendition of the originally dance-pop themed One Republic song, Rolling Stone reported. She was previously lauded for her takes on classic tunes such as Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman” in the past episodes and continued to make powerful musical performances as the show progressed.
Linsey’s performance was awarded with a standing ovation from the panelists, with original coach Pharrell Williams giving her the highest praises. "You're living proof you should not give up on your dream," the proud Williams said. The high-profile coach gave her up for another contestant during the Battle Rounds, in which Shelton, the only judge who did not turn his chair for her during the Blind Auditions, luckily saw great potential in her and took her in.
Coincidentally, Linsey had previously shared the stage with Shelton a few years back when Steel Magnolia, her duo with then-boyfriend Joshua Scott Jones, opened for him in his concert. Shelton, who felt sheepish for not turning his chair after Linsey’s audition, admitted that she was "one of the best singers” he has ever heard in his life, Billboard reported.
The Louisiana native was one of the most promising stars in 2009 after Steel Magnolia’s debut single “Keep On Lovin’ You” reached No. 4 on the country chart and turned out to be one of the biggest songs in 2010 for the genre. However, she also had her share of setbacks as she and Jones broke up in 2011 after the latter was checked into rehab. She was forced to continue the duo’s tour with James Otto as a fill-in but completely dropped the act by 2013.
Also during Monday’s show, the 29-year-old confessed that it was hard for her to completely start over. She also acknowledged the fact that she had haters, who thought it was unfair that she was on the show given that she has “had her shot” before.
Despite this, she continues to have a positive outlook on her musical career. “I’m grateful that 'The Voice' does allow people who have had careers to come on the show like this and re-introduce themselves, giving an opportunity for a second chance. It’s interesting with all the contestants: we’re all the underdog in our own ways,” she said.
Live Playoffs will end on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, with contestants from Team Christina and Team Adam taking the stage. Each team will be narrowed down to three contestants to form the season’s Top 12 on Wednesday. Linsey’s rendition of “Love Runs Out” is now also available for download on iTunes.
