The Voice US recap: TSoul, Stephanie Rice get saved
The Voice Live Playoffs took place on Monday night and left everyone with the memory of beautiful performances. Coaches Adam Levine, Alicia Keys, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were all present with their contestants. However, Monday night belonged to Team Blake and Team Alicia. Team Gwen and Team Adam's artists will perform on Tuesday night.
Monday saw Team Blake's Felicia Temple and Team Alicia’s Jack Cassidy as the Comeback Artists in the show. Let's start with the performances from Team Blake first.
Team Blake
Casi Joy kicked off Monday night to give a musical performance of Chris Stapleton's “Parachute.” Adam called her performance as “fiery and amazing” and gave Joy an A+ for the song. Blake too was impressed with Joy's performance and credited Joy for bringing so much energy on the stage. “Between how accurate your pitch is and how playful, and putting your own spin on a Chris Stapleton song, it’s hard for me to imagine you not moving forward,” Blake told Joy.
Comeback artist Temple was the second artist to perform from team Blake and she chose to give her one hundred percent to the song titled “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked.” Temple was earlier in Alicia's team, and her former mentor was very impressed with her performance. She told her that she is very content with Temple's evolution on the show and that she is “super proud” of her. “You killed it. I am glad to be on this journey with you.”
Next was the turn of teenager Aaliyah Rose, who joined Blake's team after leaving Team Gwen. The 14-year-old impressed the judges with her performance of “Brass in Pocket” by “The Pretenders.” Her former mentor Gwen was impressed with her singing and told her that the song sounded good because she sang it. Blake went all the way and told her that it was Rose's best performance on the show yet. “That was exactly what you needed to do,” she told Rose.
TSoul was the next person to perform, singing Eddie Floyd's “Knock on Wood.” Adam told him that he has a “soulful voice.” Blake was impressed with his song and congratulated TSoul for the wonderful energy he showed on the stage. Next was Aliyah Moulden's turn. She chose the song “Mercy” by Duffy. Blake told her that “Mercy” is a great choice to perform on Live Playoff.
Team Blake's performance ended with Lauren Duski, who chose a country song titled “Someone Else’s Star” by Bryan White. Adam was very impressed with Duski's singing and told her she has all the qualities to “make it far” in the show. He also complimented her on how she had a wonderful control of her breath, added she was one of her favorites on the show.
“You are going to see a tidal wave of support from country music fans. I will be shocked if you are not voted through,” Blake told Duski, adding that he also agrees on everything Adam said about her. Blake also felt that Duski might get huge votes from the fans of country music.
Team Alicia
Next was the turn of team Alicia's first performance; they chose soul singer Chris Blue to sing “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna. The Tennessee-based singer impressed Gwen by her version of RiRi's song. She told Blue that he has a “natural gift” for music and she is happy for him. His mentor Alicia said that she was so excited to see Blue take up that song for the Live Playoffs. “You are a beautiful soul,” Alicia concluded.
Next on the stage was another teenager Anatalia Villaranda, who sang a classic number from Ben E.King's “Stand by Me.” The 17-year-old singer from Temecula, California impressed Alicia with her performance. “I think it is wonderful the diversity that you have and the range that is inside you. You did a beautiful job,” Alicia said.
After Villaranda, it was the turn of Team Alicia's comeback artist Jack Cassidy, who chose Elton John's “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” Alicia told Cassidy that she sees the quality of greatness in him and is “rooting for him.” Next on stage was Vanessa Ferguson, who started her performance of “Lean On” with a piano. Adam gave her a standing ovation for it and told her that she is an amazing singer. “I can’t wait to see what you do next week,” he said.
Alicia was highly impressed with Ferguson's performance and said that she loves the fact that she is “breaking all rules” to show everyone what she truly is. “I love that you have no limits. I love that you are so ready, like Adam said, to show the world your heart,” Alicia said.
Ashley Levin performed next with Ann Peebles on “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” Alicia told her that it was one of her favourite songs and she loved the way they performed in. The Voice finally wrapped up with the performance by Stephanie Rice, who joined Alicia after leaving Gwen. She sang the popular song “Every Breath You Take” by The Police.
Her former mentor Gwen told her that she cannot stop thinking about her but at the same time, she is happy that she was very confident on stage today. Alicia had wonderful words for her and said that every time she performs, she “transports” her to another world.
After the performances came the much-dreaded voting time for the contestants. The show has an instant voting on the NBC app and on Twitter for Team Blake. Lauren Dusky and Aaliyah Rose were saved by voting from the American fans. Blake chose TSoul by using his power to save one artist.
Team Alicia's voting results were as follows. Chris Blue and Vanessa Ferguson were saved by voting, while Alicia saved Stephanie Rice. The Voice US 2017 will air now on Tuesday night with the second part of the Live Playoffs at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. It can also be watched online on the official website by fans in Australia.
