Want to Know the Meaning of Life? Ask Apple’s Siri
Apple has described Siri as an "intelligent assistant" but developers should have added another feature to Siri: budding comedian.
Apple iPhone 4s might have disappointed Apple fans by virtue of not being the iPhone 5 but this new upgrade to the iPhone line has one major draw, Siri. The virtual assistant is practically an artificial intelligence. It can listen to your "natural language" questions and respond like your own personal secretary. The software is capable of understanding the context in the questions you ask it, which is really nothing but amazing. Ask it to schedule an appointment and it will ask you what time and it will help you arrange it so that you don't have any conflicting meetings at that time. Siri will help you find restaurants, map out the nearest movie theaters and arrange your contacts.
And in some instances Siri can even help you with your existential crisis and tell you the meaning of life.
When asked about "What is the meaning of life?" by The Verge's Joshua Topolsky, Siri answered quite sarcastically, "To think about questions like this." If prodded Siri will answer exasperatedly, "I can't answer that now, but give me some time to write a very long play in which nothing happens." Ask Siri "Tell me a joke." and she will respond: "I can't. I always forget the punch line." Apple's virtual assistant has a wicked sense of humor.
Of course Siri still has bugs with its software. It's still in beta and it needs a network connection to get you answers but this new software is still a step in Apple's philosophy of "less is more". Siri is also a leap forward in Artificial Intelligence. It won't be long before now we can expect to find smarter virtual assistants in our devices.
